Date & Time: Friday, December 26, 2025, 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Title: The Green Fairy in a Bottle: Scapegoating and stigma

Speaker: Dr Tao Wang Professor, Department of Strategy emlyon business school

Venue: Room# 3403, Meeting Room, 4th Floor, Mercury Tower, Kunitachi East Campus, Hitotsubasi University

In this seminar, we are pleased to welcome Professor Wang (emlyon Business School), the corresponding author of the paper “Scapegoating in Stigma Construction: Unraveling the Historical Case of Absinthe”, which was just published in Organization Studies (A\)* in October 2025.This study unpacks the relational dynamics of how stakeholders shift positions and how new targets emerge as stigma intensifies. Drawing on the anti-absinthe campaign in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the paper proposes a model in which scapegoating unfolds through a cycle of construction → expansion → reinforcement, showing how self-defense at each stage paradoxically accelerates the spread of stigma.

It makes an important contribution by supplementing stigma research with a process-oriented perspective, which has often been underexplored. For those interested in stigma studies within organizational theory, qualitative analysis, or historical approaches, this seminar promises to offer significant insights.
