The HIAS Brown Bag Seminar is a seminar series hosted by Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS).
The seminar series aims to promote interaction between HIAS researchers, faculty members, and students university-wide.
HIAS, with its 10 research centers, will continue to strive to function as a hub to facilitate active research collaboration throughout the University.

▪️Title: “Neo-Legal Anthropocentrism and Japanese Animal Law”

▪️Speaker: Akimune Yoshida (Specially Appointed Assistant Professor, HIAS)

▪️Abstract: This presentation explores and analyzes animal law in Japan and i ts character through “neo-legal anthropocentrism”. Animal law is a relatively new academic field, and legal issues arise from the gradual and steady shift in response to changing social attitudes towards animals in each social context. While some families accept their companion animals as their fellow members, many industrial animals are on farms or in facilities conducting experiments on them. The Japanese legal system categorizes animals as things or property, and both statutes and case law recognize their uniqueness, i.e. that an animal is a living being. Nevertheless, that does not mean that every animal enjoys equal protection or is accorded respect. Legal protection reflects the social relevance between humans and animals.
